Kenya's Fight Against Covid-19: Are We Losing the Fight Already?

I am going to keep this short, for the past 2 months, we saw our case load as well as the death load multiply in quick succession. And its extremely unfortunate that this is a blend of public refusal to comply with the simple health protocols of mask wearing, hand washing and social distancing. As much as social distancing may sometimes be at its limit, Mask wearing and hand washing could potentially reduce the infections by nearly 95% as states by various Center of Diseases Controls (CDC) globally. Therefore, here are some of the scenarios that we have that explain the state of affairs of the country.

Change of priorities

  1. It’s crazy how were channeling 16billion to the constitutional reforms while at the same time you claim that you do not have the adequate money to provide masks for children in school?

Return of Political rallies and campaigns

  1. The same leaders who were preaching for civic responsibility, are now rallying to the same public and driving them in huge crowds increasing risk of transmission.

“You are on your own."

  1. The NHIF & Health Insurance companies are pulling out in funding patients’ bills of those who got the COVID-19 virus.

  2. Healthcare workers strike that is impeding the treatment of those affected by the virus.

  3. Scandal rocking KEMRI concerning the hoarding of life saving protective equipment worth ksh7.8 billion .

Caution thrown to the wind.

  1. Increase of festivals, public gatherings with close to zero health protocols which have put thousands of people at risk.

  2. Non-adherence to mask wearing, social distancing and hygiene practices.

  3. Approaching holiday season which could be a massive infection season due to gatherings and ceremonies being held.

The Conspiracy Monger.

  1. Group of people spreading information claiming that the government lied about covid-19 so that it could get funds to steal. This statement potentially affects the mindset of people making them believe that the virus does not exist. This was yet the most detrimental factor that could have led to people, especially in the rural areas to forgo several measures of mask wearing, social distancing as well as hand washing. Based on the theory that “the government deliberately lowered the number of cases after they realized that we knew they were stealing funds.” Some of these talks are extremely detrimental to how an individual and society as a whole take the pandemic. And with community transmission at its highest ever, some of these thoughts still persist.

Therefore, with all these scenarios, and a continuing rising death toll of the health workers, is Kenya really ready for a second wave of the pandemic?

For now all that I can say is, "you are on your own."
